Power Of Education

Research

Founding Fathers

Education is the foundation for which our democracy stands

Without it, prejudice and ignorance breed violence and divides. Yet, the power of education is not taken seriously enough. Some people think being educated might mean just being able to ace a test, but education goes a lot further than memorization. In today’s America, we see a lot of the country divided by political beliefs. I argue in this article that it has more to do with education. All people are very much the same at birth: no religion, no set differences between one another, and similar learning paces. The difference comes into picture when you see the parent structure that steers their character away from morality or freedom of choice. Education teaches open-mindedness, and open-mindedness fosters curiosity and acceptance. It is when we shut down the ability to communicate with one another that we begin to see the divide grow taller and wider. Easterbrook, Kuppens, and Manstead explain in their journal article published in Social Indicators Research education as “a predictor of a range of important outcomes, such as political interest and cynicism, social trust, health, well-being, and intergroup attitudes.” The authors continue by stating that lower education levels resulted in greater disinterest in politics and greater cynicism. If we want to keep our democracy alive we have to progress education in our country.

We don’t owe it to ourselves, we owe it to those who are denied education.

We must learn for the young girls in the world barred from learning, but also for our own children. Some do not get easy access to knowledge, which is unacceptable. This happens when a group of people doesn’t want another group of people to become mentally free. By keeping someone uneducated, you keep them weaker and more controllable. This is dangerous to the world. If we stand by and take our own education for granted, how can we expect the world to get better? We must lead by example because retribution is delivered by those in power, and that cannot be those who keep others underneath them. The beautiful part about education is it gives you the tools to challenge conventional thought. When you are empowered to challenge other people’s ideas it leads you to create better ideas or even compromise on a deal. Education allows you to understand another person’s perspective. Education is what keeps us from tearing each other apart like wild animals. When we disenfranchise ourselves from our sense of pridefulness in intelligence, we create a negative feedback loop.

John F. Kennedy

Distinguish those who seek to educate others.

The best gift you can give someone is the gift of mental fortitude. Let us not forget how our country was founded, we desired independence from tyranny and tyranny resents independence. To defend ourselves, the most effective way is to pass on our information to the next generations. We need to support those who support others or else we cannot retreat regret. To leave this blog post in the words of one of our great founding fathers:

"I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, (A)nd if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power."
Thomas Jefferson

As always, continue to think differently.
