How To Control Your Past

What does the past mean to you?

Is it something that you constantly think about or maybe it is something that is constantly in the back of your mind? Do you remember your childhood? When you think back to these times of your life do you see content? Do you see regret? When you think back to these times of your life, do you feel the content, or do you feel the regret? To discover who you are and how to move forward in life, you must first learn why you have done the things you have done, and then secondly ask yourself why you want to grow and be better than you are now. Sometimes when you feel regret for the past this means that you might have a childhood trauma that is holding you back from progressing. You must dig deeper into why you are holding on to the past.

Why is the past so important to YOU? Why is it so hard to not care what others MIGHT think about you? You don’t know what they actually believe, they have an entirely separate life with separate problems and issues within themselves. Maybe they haven’t tried to dig deeper into themselves like you have, and that just means they don’t know any better. There are two certainties in life you must learn: first, love yourself. Second, love those who’s love is forthcoming and forgiving. Don’t relinquish your emotions for those who have none to give, and don’t permit yourself to be caught up in someone's judgment if they can’t forgive you for your shortcomings. No one is perfect, so don’t let them fool you. Do not let them control you. Do not let their lack of love in life reduce your ability to love. Appreciate the ones who genuinely care for you and try your best to ignore the noise of hatred (look up mindfulness training).

Focus on who you are, and more importantly, why you are that. Let’s look at the question: what are your personality traits? We can begin to answer this question by understanding the different types of personality traits. Here are some examples of traits you can have:

  1. Openness: appreciation for a variety of experiences.
  2. Conscientiousness: planning ahead rather than being spontaneous.
  3. Extraversion: being sociable, energetic and talkative.
  4. Agreeableness: being kind, sympathetic and happy to help.
  5. Neuroticism: inclined to worry or be vulnerable or temperamental.

Pick one that explains the most how you want to see yourself in life. Think about how you want your day to day life to be like. This is your life and you must decide on a lifestyle or your past will dictate your lifestyle for you. When you feel hopeless channel the anger within yourself and remember all the moments someone told you that you couldn’t accomplish something. Do it to prove them wrong and doing that enough times will eventually lead you to genuinely believe you deserve good in your life instead of suffering. The old adage “fake it ‘til you make it” applies here and allows us an easier path to obtaining discipline in times when we are emotionally hurt.

Create a quest for yourself, a mission statement, as to why you are here on earth. Whatever way you want to go about changing your world is entirely up to you, but if you don’t have a way to push you through the pain and struggle you will inevitably endure, you will surely crumble. Stay strong, create a system to succeed, and execute with a real set of motivations to get it done. Last but not least, make sure you’re passionate about whatever it is you do because people don’t care how smart you are, they follow what you do because of how much heart you have. Never forget that. Continue to think differently.
